Bill Vancil was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2013. He started as a one-dollar-an-hour announcer at WKEI in his home town, Kewanee, Illinois. While attending Illinois Wesleyan University he worked at WPEO in Peoria, then transferred to Augustana College in the Quad-Cities where he worked at KSTT, Davenport, as Program Director. Later, Bill moved to Madison, Wisconsin working for Mid-West Family Broadcasting, starting as Program Director of WISM-FM. For ten years he served as Mid-West Family’s Executive Vice-President and General Manager of the group’s five radio stations.
His radio career started somewhat by accident as he was an art major in college, and aspired to becoming a commercial artist. He did apply his artistic skills in many ways throughout his radio career designing everything from logos to billboards, and upon retirement from radio started his own graphic design business. Bill continues to do freelance writing, website and logo design, and voice over work. He is a published author with two books to his credit. His avocations include painting, photography, and golf. He has also recorded a CD called “Smooth Country Covers.”
Bill Vancil now lives in Marana, Arizona, a suburb of Tucson, on the edge of the Sonoran Desert, with his domestic partner, Andrea Byk, along with his dog and cat, Paco and Kitty.
